Dreamers often fail to achieve their dreams because they keep second guessing what they are doing. They ask questions like: “Is this a waste of time?” “Will it work?” “Why are the results so poor?” and so on.

As a result, they act half-heartedly and fail to finish what they have planned. They fail to discover whether their planned action would have worked or not. This article takes a look at whether questions are a help or a hindrance.

We often think too much and talk too much and sometimes we talk and ask questions because we are reluctant to act. We may need to copy Tarzan of the Apes. He used words sparingly but was always poised for action whether this meant diving in with a crocodile or facing up to the king of the jungle!

Football teams start questioning the referee when they are failing to win. Instead of working hard and concentrating on the game they spend all their energy complaining and harassing the match officials. Their failure to recover from their losing position is almost certain.

Some people may have given up jogging because of the questions raised when one of the great jogging gurus died young. Why bother to jog when you can die early just like the majority who spend their leisure time watching TV?

No one doubts that many people have fallen ill because of their own actions such as eating too much of the wrong food or because of their inactions such as failing to go for a daily walk or workout.

But some of the fittest men and women have suddenly succumbed to disease and died young. Does this mean that we should give up eating in a healthy way and stop going for daily walks? I think not but some think yes. Why bother to live a healthy lifestyle when you may die young anyway?

When I started the martial arts, after watching the Kung Fu series which featured David Carradine as a Shaolin monk, questioning the teacher was not a good idea.

If you ventured the opinion that a certain move might not work, the teacher would demonstrate how well it worked and guess who they demonstrated on: the student who had had the cheek to question their methods!

A less dictatorial teacher would just laugh at the question and the majority of the class would laugh with him. I was always one of the keenest questioners until I learned the painful lesson that it was wiser to keep my questions to myself.

We need to realize that questions can often be an excuse for not getting on with the hard work of training and that as you train you will learn the answers for yourself without wasting the time of the whole class.

There is much then to be said for taking massive action with maximum effort and keeping any questions for later. You will get much better at whatever you are doing and will find you can answer many of your own questions.

Instead of second guessing your copy writing tutor, try following his or her suggestions and see what happens. Instead of doubting your health adviser just do as they say and see how you feel after a few weeks.

On the other hand, some questions deserve an immediate answer and can lead to new and powerful developments.

In the martial arts world, people started to question whether some of the traditional techniques would work in a street fight situation.

I once asked a world renowned martial artist at a seminar in London why people would choose to put a lock on someone’s arm by lying on their back with one of their legs dangerously close to their opponent’s teeth. He and his associates laughed at my question but neither he nor they answered it.

I have since realized that I was right about the danger of getting bitten when using this lock. In addition, lying on your back in order to put on an arm lock is suicide in a street situation.

Even if you are not bitten in the leg, your arms and legs are tied up controlling your opponent and one of his friends or even a complete stranger could easily kick you in the head. You could also be run over by a car or bus!

Questions like the above and other questions like “Why train for hours to be able to kick someone in the head when it is so much easier to punch them instead?” have lead to the development of reality based self-defense systems which concentrate solely on what will work when you are faced by a psychopath who does not care about rules of engagement or whether you will live or die.

These systems make sense and could save the lives of those who do not have the time or determination to train for years in the more traditional systems. They could also save a lot of wasted time learning and practicing techniques that are impractical for the majority of people.

So then, questions do have value.

We are left with the question whether we should question what we are doing or not? The answer, as is often the case. is to compromise or reach a balance.

Questions have their uses but not when we are supposed to be taking action whether we have planned the action or are following the training of an instructor we respect.

Questions will still pop into our minds like: ‘Is this really necessary?’ ‘Do we have to do this?” Save these questions up until you have completed the suggested actions and then you will be in a good position to have an informed answer.

Ask questions at the start of any project and after it is over or if it goes drastically wrong but, if at all possible, avoid questioning what you are doing while you are still in the process of doing it.

Last week, one of my students told me cheerfully that he had just been offered a job in the Royal Navy which would lead to exceptionally high engineering and diving qualifications. The job was clearing mines.

I hated pouring cold water on his dreams but felt it was my duty to remind him of the potential drawbacks of his proposed career like getting killed or badly injured. One of my teachers had been blinded when disarming a land mine. This had ruined both his life and his family’s.

The time for serious questioning or counting the cost was now before my student signed up and found himself in cold, murky water with sharks nibbling at his flippers whilst he was faced with the terrifying task of disarming a strange mine!

Questioning at the right time has great value but try not to mix it in with your actions. Once action is started, focus on the end result and only stop for questions if things go disastrously wrong. Feeling tired and discouraged is not a good reason to start questioning what you are doing.

If you can’t resist asking the questions early on, at least keep going with your original plan until you receive some kind of an answer.

Conflict Resolution Skills Can Be Learned

Fear of conflict is common.

We are anxious when we recall past quarrels and disagreements that resulted in personal injury, either physical or emotional. We remember feeling frightened, defeated and powerless.

To avoid repeating the experience, we can become passive, agreeable or accepting. We try to please the challenger, so they do not strike out again. We believe we have some power over the other person’s outbursts thinking; "If I change… things will be better."

We may withdraw from the situation, believing the problem will be solved with time. Withdrawal, not talking or avoiding contact can also be a attempt at control. Solutions are not possible with the other person absent.

Acting in these ways will not help the situation improve.

Problems need to be solved to go away. Unresolved power struggles resurface disguised in different situations.

If we verbally and physically beat on others, we have not accepted personal responsibility for our behaviour. We think others control us. Someone else "makes" me angry. We are really saying; "I do not have control over myself."

When we lash out at the ideas others present, we reveal our own anxiety. This insecurity can lead to frightening, overpowering behaviour. Conflict can only be resolved without name calling, hitting, threats of bodily harm and undermining the other person’s self esteem. An atmosphere of safety is necessary.

Each person must gain control over their own behaviour. We must choose to accept responsibility for our thoughts, words and deeds. We have the power to change ourselves!

Identifying a specific problem is the first step to solving it.

Resolving a deep problem often means solving smaller superficial differences first.

We must also let go of the idea that there is always a winner and a loser. When we think we know the one "right" way, we limit our ability to negotiate. Gaining suitable results, requires a struggle to find common ground. All parties involved need to commit to solving the problems.

By sticking to the issues, using examples to make our points and communicating our wants clearly, specific areas needing resolution can be pin pointed. A desire to resolve the difference must be honestly present in each person.

Occupational Stress Management

There are many people in the world who can not stand where they work. Their occupation causes them no end of stress and can leave them struggling to get to sleep at night. There are also many days taken off sick through stress related illnesses. It is now time for people to deal with these issues and to start to react in a more positive and proactive way.

In the past I have worked for companies whose employees have made my life unbearable. These so called colleagues were very bitchy, hanged around in various clans and would stab people in the back at regular intervals. At times I would even dread going to work and would feel sick whilst travelling to my office.

I would return home feeling very drained and would have little energy to do anything in the evenings. I would then decide to go to bed early but would basically just lay their worrying about the next day. This could last for hours on end and at times would last all of the night.

I have read that plenty of sleep is a good way at reducing levels of stress, the question is, how does one get to sleep in the first place?

When I did have the energy to socialise with family or friends, the fear of going to work would end up ruining the night and would stop me from enjoying myself. I felt sorry for the people I was with and hoped that I did not ruin their night as well.

For whatever reason I did not have the confidence to tell people about the problems I had and kept it bottled up to myself. This I now realise was a mistake and I have since learnt to talk about any issues that I have.

For all the stress I had to endure, I certainly was not paid enough. The people who I worked with, including the team leaders, did not treat me with as much respect as I felt I deserved. This period was a very unhappy stage of my life and my health started to become affected.

I wanted to leave this company a lot earlier than the time that I eventually did, the problem was that I did not feel that I could afford to. I decided to save up enough money over a period of about six months so that I could then make my escape. At the same time I started to look at finding alternative work and thought long and hard about which career path I wanted to take.

On the day that I left this job, I will never forget my journey home. I could not stop smiling, I was so relieved that this nightmare was over once and for all.

I am happy to let you know that I have not found myself in a similar situation since. There may well be a time in the future of course when I do and if this ever happens to me again I am determined to leave a lot quicker than I did before. Life is to short to spend living in the way that I had.

Your Biggest Do it Yourself Project

When I meet people and tell them what I do, I often hear, “Oh, you are a motivational speaker,” with some amount of assuredness in their voice. While I realize there are many speakers that people lump into this category (some who are my friends and mentors), I strongly disagree with that label.

Do I speak? Yes.

Can I inspire, challenge thinking, provide ideas, input, and encouragement (and in smaller settings), provide feedback? Yes I can.

Can I motivate? No I can’t.

DIY

There is a channel on my television called DIY - The Do It Yourself Network. On this channel you can learn how to make drapes, redo your landscape, take care of your yard, build a deck, make unique crafts, and much more. Many people must watch it, because it has been on my television for several years.
Actually this doesn’t surprise me. People want to learn how to do new things. They want to avoid the cost of the expensive plumber, carpenter or painter, and they like the pride that comes with seeing the results of their efforts.

If people do the things they learn about (rather than just watching) they are doing it because they are self motivated. No crafty, clever, or comical TV host has motivated them - they have motivated themselves.

It is the same with our personal, professional and business projects - we may work with others and need expert coaching, advise, counsel and encouragement, but in the end these are “Do it yourself” projects too.

Five Suggestions

Here are five things you can do to make your own improvement and growth and “do it to yourself” project.

1. Have a reason for doing. If your windows are bare, you know you need drapes. If your grill sits in the grass, you know you want a deck in your backyard. What is the reason you want to improve your skills or habits or achieve new results? Having a clear goal is the first step towards self motivation. If you watch the TV show because you are interested, but don’t need that skill, you will just watch. If you listen to a great speaker or read their book and don’t have a clear goal, you’ll get no more than an enjoyable experience.

2. Take action every day. You have your goal, your reason, so now take action. I can’t take that action for you any more than Bob Villa, your boss or a family member can. Make a plan and get started. You don’t have to carve out two hours in your already over crowded day, but do something. Take a step towards your self-improvement project every day. At least one thing, every day.

3. Put in the positive stuff. Many people who are learning to build that deck buy books, magazines, and software; go to the local hardware super center for classes and ask for advice, and much more. Are you putting anywhere near this amount of time, effort, and money into reaching your personal or professional improvement goals? Read or listen to the positive, uplifting material each day. Consider it inspirational fuel for your own motivation.

4. Lose the Losers. Do you have people around you who aren’t willing to invest in themselves? How much time are you spending with those who ridicule or put down your efforts? While you may not be able to remove these people from your life, you can reduce the impact their attitude has on you. Recognize how they negatively impact you and move on.

5. Turn off the TV. Yes, even football, I remind myself. Am I saying you should not watch any television? No, but TV is the major time stealer in our society and is a self reinforcing habit. Every show has commercials for other shows. So not only are watching others achieve their goals while we aren’t achieving ours, but we are being bombarded with messages about products we don’t need and being convinced to watch even more. You will find as you watch less TV it gets easier to watch less. Why? In part because you won’t know what is on!

The person who learned how to dry wall his own basement when asked why they chose to do it says something like, “I figured no one would care as much about the quality of the job as I would, so I decided to learn myself. Besides, I have so much more pride in the results.”

These are great reasons to “do it yourself.” Apply that same logic and reasoning to yourself. Don’t ask me to motivate you. That is your job. Just like the expert on TV, I can help show the way and help you see that it is possible. But in the end, it is your life, your results, your project.

The Truth Behind All Education

Wondering why genius scholars like Aristotle, Karl Max, Max Weber, etc know everything and almost all solutions to the world’s problems, I have come up with “one new concept on education”.

We say we are learning the new things; the things that we have never touched and thought of during the course of life, but this is wrong, what we say we are learning or accepting as the new things are just “the compilation or systematization works” of those we call the pioneers or masterminds.

For instance, we say that we are learning civil law and common law traditions which are the absolutely new courses for us in the university, but indeed, we are not learning the new things as we are thinking; we are just mastering the things that we have touched everyday; unconsciously. Civil law and common law are not new legal systems, because they have been ubiquitously practiced in their founding father lands (France and the United Kingdom), the term “civil and common laws” only that make us feel that we are learning something absolutely new.

Things we accept as new are just the “compilation and systematization works” of their founding fathers. The founding fathers are smart enough to compile every similar thing and make them into one existence or one system, in order to help us easier to learn, to understand or to deeply understand and finally, to facilitate implementation.

To wrap up, all education is not new, because those claim to be the pioneers are just the smart people who can compile and systematize everyday touching phenomenon and name them [the term only is new, but the contains are just our protracted touching phenomenon].

Why do I need to reveal this truth? I want to make life for all of us; students, businesspersons, and whoever easier and deer to aspire higher than this reading moment.

The Ultimate James Bond USA Trip

Here’s a trip that James Bond wouldn’t have the time for. But if you do, your Bond girl will never forget it. “She’ll be catching her breath for six months.”

Start in Orlando for a few days at DisneyWorld and get a hotel near “Downtown Disney” or at the Animal Kingdom Lodge. Then take AmTrak from there overnight to Philadelphia.

From the Philadelphia train station rent a car (with a navigational system) and drive to Atlantic City to sea the boardwalk, the Atlantic and gamble a little. There’s not too much else to do besides gamble and eat, so after 3 hours head off to Lancaster county to see the Amish locations via a tour that leaves the visitor’s center.

Next drive southwest passing through the Gettysburg civil war battle field and monuments. Drive through Tennessee ending up in Memphis. Stay at “Heartbreak Hotel” (small, but convenient) and tour Elvis’ Graceland. Go down to Dallas and visit the book depository museum were JFK was shot and “JFK” was filmed. Stay at the North Dallas Hilton next to the Galaria Mall.

Next, head to Albuquerque and stay at the Sheraton Old Town Hotel. Shop and eat at old town. Don’t miss the “Rattlesnake Museum”. Small, but creepy

Then it’s up to Monument Valley where the only place to stay is Gouldings Lodge. Drive to the visitor’s center where you can hire a Native American to take you by jeep to see the sights. But I prefer to use my own car and enjoy the sights on my own.

Next drive down to the Grand Canyon and stay at one of the rim hotels as mentioned before. Then down to Flagstaff and back track 30 miles to see the Meteor Crater. Yes, it’s just a big whole, but it also has an interesting museum and there’s a Subway sandwich shop there for a quick bite.

Next it’s on to Las Vegas by driving over the Hoover Dam, where you can take a 20 minute interior dam tour and ride the paddle boat on the very blue Lake Mead for some “Planet of the Apes” type scenery. It looks similar to the Lake Powell location where Heston crash landed his spaceship.

From Vegas, stop over a few minutes at the California stateline and see the “Bonnie and Clyde Car” at the Primm Casino Mall. Be forewarned, it’s not the movie car. It’s the real thing, as is Clyde’s death shirt. There’s a Fashion Outlet mall there, for your girl to shop and you can ride “The Desperado”, which premiered in 1994 as the worlds tallest, steepest and longest steel coaster.

Next, hit the Los Angeles attractions. Stay at the Disney Pier Hotel. See Disney’s two parks, Knott’s Berry Farm, and the Movieland Wax Museum. Then stay a night at the Universal Hilton and visit the studio attractions.

After surviving the Jurasic Park dinosaurs, drive North toward San Francisco, stopping at the small Scandinavian town of Solvang for some quick eating, shopping, and gambling (at the Chumash Indian Casino).

Next stop is Monterey where you can sleep at the Doubletree Hotel next to Fisherman’s Warph and go whale watching the next morning. Just 15 minutes from there is Carmel. Park and walk down Ocean Ave to see the shops and end up at the beach. Then back up to your car and on to Santa Cruz to ride the Giant Dipper at the Beach Boardwalk. Find the Bazookas that shoot baseballs at targets and blast a few.

From there it’s 90 minutes to San Francisco. Stay at the Fisherman’s Warph Hilton for a few days. Don’t miss the 45 minute bay cruise, the cliff house, and Chinatown. The “motorized cable car” tours near the pier have great 90 minute and 3 hour tours. After that turn in your rental car at the airport and fly home, knowing you surpassed any trip James Bond has been on.
