Wine Tasting in Carneros

Filed under: Food + Cooking @ 7:53 am

The Carneros AVA has become one of the premier regions of the
Napa Valley for wine tasting. Carneros is the closest wine
region to San Francisco, making it the first stop for many wine
tours through the Napa Valley.

Because of its proximity to the San Pablo bay, the day time
temperature is moderated by wind and fog from this body of
water. This makes for excellent conditions for growing Pinot
Noir and Chardonnay. Subsequently, some of the best American
sparkling wine producers are located in the AVA.

You do not have to be a wine expert to enjoy tasting in
Carneros. But since Carneros was awarded AVA status in 1980, the
number of resident wineries in has greatly increased. So with
limited time and budget, which ones do you visit?

No matter how prestigious the area is, no wine is guaranteed to
be good. There are so many factors that go into viticulture and
winemaking, choosing a wine based solely on the region is
basically a shot in the dark. The same can be said for deciding
which wineries to visit on a wine tour.

When planning a wine tasting tour, consider wineries that
produce the varietals you enjoy or would like to experience. For
example, if you want to taste Champagne style Sparkling Wines,
Domaine Carneros should be at the top of your list. This winery
is owned Taittinger Champagne House. Their stunning Chateau has
become a Carneros Landmark, and is among the most beautiful
wineries in Napa County. Domaine also offers a thirty minute
tour of their facilities, which culminates in their tasting room
with spectacular views of their vineyards.

For Pinot Noir aficionados, you cannot go wrong with Acacia
Winery. If you choose to visit Acacia, I would advise tasting
the 2002 Beckstoffer Pinot Noir; you will not be disappointed.

If you would like to taste a wider range of varietals, visit
Artesa Winery. They have produced several wines made with
several different grapes that have received 90 + points from
major wine ratings. This, along with their winery’s recent 10
million dollar renovation has made Artesa a premier destination
in Carneros.

Cline Cellars is also a pleasure to visit. Their tasting room is
a restored 1850’s farmhouse, and they have a picnic site on the
premises that overlooks their 350 acre vineyard. This makes
Cline Cellars a great place to taste wine and enjoy your lunch.

Aside from the wine itself, other pleasing aspects of tasting
experience lie in the beauty of the tasting room, winery and
surrounding landscape. Although it does not take a beautiful
setting to enjoy a great wine, it definitely adds to the
experience.

The taster’s overall experience is by far the most important
part of wine tasting. Most wineries in Carneros realize this,
and offer whatever they can to make your trip more enjoyable.
Many tastings will be hosted by a member of the winemaking team,
so they can answer questions and explain the subtleties of the
wines. Whichever wineries you visit, make sure to bring your
tasting room etiquette.

First of all, it is not advisable to bring children into the
tasting room. As far as the actual tasting is concerned, white
wines are generally poured first, followed by reds, and finally
desert wines. Within each of these, the lighter bodied wines
precede fuller bodied ones. Between each wine, it is common
practice to eat a cracker to cleanse your palate.

It is not necessary to finish each wine you taste; it is
actually discouraged, especially if you are planning to taste
many different wines. Wineries will provide jars to dispose of
any excess wine. Additionally, do not feel obligated to try
every wine that is offered.

If you ask for a second tasting, it is in good taste to buy a
bottle of wine. It is by no means necessary to buy wine when
tasting, but if you make an appointment with a smaller winery,
it is customary to make a purchase.

If you are thinking about visiting the Napa Valley, Carneros is
an excellent place to start your journey into what many people
describe as “heaven on earth.”

Mortgage Refinance with Bad Credit - The Pros and Cons

Filed under: Real Estate Parlor @ 6:18 am

To many, the term ‘bad credit’ is the end of the world when
it comes to getting financing in the near future. However,
it doesn’t always have to be like that, you can take the
bad credit mortgage refinance option!

Mortgage refinance vs. equity finance

It is essential at the outset that you understand there is
a fundamental difference between mortgage refinancing and
equity financing. Basically, with equity financing you are
using the surplus amount you may have stored up in your
property between your outstanding mortgage amount and the appraised value of your home. However a mortgage refinance is where you find a new lender willing to lend you the whole appraised value of your property, the sum of which you then use to repay your existing mortgage lender and the remaining sum you can utilize in any manner you wish. Because of this, you are faced with a different set of problems than would be the case with an equity financing.

The pros of a bad credit mortgage refinance

Aside from any possible equity financing you can do with
your property, without doubt the biggest upside to a bad
credit mortgage refinance is the fact that it is a long-term and cheap form of borrowing. Interest rates are likely to be low and, possibly, can even be fixed. You could even possibly benefit from certain tax advantages from a bad credit mortgage refinance.

Because of this, bad credit mortgage finance can allow you
to do things financially that may not otherwise be
available to you as a person with a bad credit rating. You
could use the equity you free up after you repay your
original mortgage lender to invest in stocks and savings
that will give you a better yield than you are currently
getting on the property.

Alternatively, you could pay off all outstanding debts you
have so that you have no interest and debt payments to make each month - merely a mortgage repayment. Finally, you could even use the equity you get to invest in a long-term
investment plan like your pension. In fact the options are so limitless that you should really consult with a financial expert who can best advise you on how you should put that money to the best use for you!

The cons of bad credit mortgage refinance

The number one downside to any mortgage refinancing,
whether it be bad credit or otherwise, is the fact that
mortgage lenders do not like to be repaid early. As such
they usually incorporate some expensive penalty clauses to
try and make it not worth your while repaying them early. With this in mind, you will need to read your original mortgage agreement with your original lender very carefully to make sure you won’t have any onerous default payments to make; or, you could try and arrange for the new lender to swallow these.

That said, if you make any arrangements with the new lender
that they agree to pay these fees for you, you then need to
make sure they do not put any restrictive clauses in your
new refinance mortgage agreement that would prohibit you
from refinancing your mortgage again at some time in the
future if the occasion warrants such.

Without a doubt, as a person with a bad credit history and
bad credit rating, a bad credit mortgage refinance can open
up avenues to you that would not otherwise be there. You do,
however, need to give consideration as to whether or not you
want to take this route. Not least because at the end of the
day your house and family home is on the line!

Monique Thomas helps you find the resources and information
you need to make an informed decision on your finances.

Black Literature: Hughes, Cullen, Baraka, and Madhubuti

Filed under: Education Portal @ 10:45 pm

The term “Jazzoetry” was coined by the Last Poets, who used it as the name of one of their albums. The term was applied to the revolutionary style of poetry with a jazz background that they had popularized during their 70s heyday. While the term may not have applied so much to the written word, particularly that before it, there were black poets who wrote with an afrocentric flow and fervor that was inspiration and insightful.

Amiri Baraka is one such poet and is considered the founding father of the Black Arts Movement. He was born Everett LeRoi Jones, in Newark, New Jersey, October 7, 1934.

Baraka (still writing under his given name of LeRoi Jones) found success early, winning the Obie In 1964 for his racially-charged play, “The Dutchman,” which focused on the brief, but volatile rapport between a young black man and a blonde temptress. He later opened a school that emphasized blackness in an artistic, musical, poetic and dramatic context.

He later divorced his (white) wife and adopted a more nationalist perspective and changed his name to Imamu Amiri Baraka. He remarried, to Sylvia Robinson, who adopted the name Amina Baraka.

In 1961 Baraka had his work, “Preface to a Twenty Volume Suicide Note” published. Two years later came, “Blues People.” But his real notoriety came when his poetry took on a stance similar to that of the Black Muslim Movement and took on what many labeled an “Anti-Semitic” tenor. Since then he has published 17 other books, including “Four Black Revolutionary Plays” (1969), “Raise Race Rays Raize: Essays Since 1965, 1971,” “The Autobiography of LeRoi Jones/Amiri Baraka” (1984), and “Somebody Blew Up America” (2001).

In 2002 Baraka was named Poet Laureate of New Jersey. One of his detractors is negro lickspittle and anti-affirmative Action crusader,. Ward Connerly. He described Baraka as, “One of America’s premier haters and anti-Semites,” in reference to the poem, “Somebody Blew Up America.” That particular work accused Israel of having prior knowledge of the 911 attacks and did nothing to alert Americans. Because of the ensuing controversy, Baraka resigned his post in 2003.

Connerly elaborated: “the New Jersey Council for the Humanities and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts formed a panel that appointed this “artist” as poet laureate. That’s right. They appointed him to this prestigious paid position ($10,000 for a two-year term, no less) in spite of the fact that he had published dozens of anti-Jewish, anti-white, pro-Black Panther screeds during the last 25 years…Did they really think his hate-infused, Jew-bashing, hip-hop-like lyrics were truly poetic?…Now I’m starting to wonder if there aren’t more Amiri Barakas out there, dishing out filth and hate under the guise of a poet laureate of another state. It wouldn’t hurt any of us to check this out.”

Technically different, Countee Cullen was born in Louisville, Kentucky, March 30, 1903, (though for most of his life he claimed New York City as his birthplace. Along with Richard Wright, Langston Hughes, Phillis Wheatley and Paul Laurence Dunbar. Among others, Cullen was one of the stars of the Harlem Renaissance. During this time He published several books of poetry, “Color” (1925), “Copper Sun” (1927) and “The Ballad of the Brown Girl” (1927)..

While his themes were black, many believed he “wrote white.” Cullen experimented with sonnets, quatrains, and other poetic forms and was influenced by John Keats. However, his work often dealt with racial issues.”

One such poem is “Simon the Cyrenian Speaks”:

He never spoke a word to me / And yet He called my name /
He never gave a sign to me / And yet I knew and came.

At first I said, “I will not bear / His cross upon my back /
He only seeks to place it there / Because my skin is black.

But He was dying for a dream / And He was very meek,
And in His eyes there shone a gleam / Men journey far to seek.

It was Himself my pity bought / I did for Christ alone
What all of Rome could not have wrought / With bruise of lash or stone.

There is a symmetry and flow to his words. It is simple yet powerful in its expression of suffering. Cullen died in 1946, falling victim to high blood pressure.

Haki R. Madhubuti is a poet who has risen to literary prominence in the Black Arts Movement. He gained his first successes writing poetry during the 60’s and early 70’s writing under his given name, Don L. Lee (He changed his name in 1973). He is also an essayist and is founder of and editor at Third World Press, the oldest Black publishing company in the Unites States. He is also a noted lecturer and educator, serving as the director of the Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing Program at Chicago State University.

Madhubuti was born in Little Rock, Arkansas February 23, 1942, but was raised in Detroit. He started his literary career in 1967 with the publication of a collection of essays titled, “Think Black.” Some of his other poetic offerings include the collections, “We Walk the Way of the World,” and “Don’t Cry, Scream.” He has published 18 other books including, “Black Men: Obsolete, Single, Dangerous,” “The African American Family in Transition,” and “Claiming Earth: Race, Rage, Rape, Redemption.”

His perspective is decidedly pro-black, seeking to raise issues for discussion and dissemination. One of his conscious-raising works is “Change Up,” which says:

change-up/
change-up,/
let’s go for ourselves/
both cheeks are broken now./
change-up,/
move past the corner bar,/
let yr/split lift u above that quick high./
change-up…/

He again takes a point-blank approach in “My Brothers, My Brothers”:

my brothers/
my brothers i will not tell you/
who to love or not love/
i will only say to you/
that/
Black women have not been/
loved enough./
i will say to you/
that/
we are at war & that/
Black men in america are/
being removed from the/
earth/

Madhubuti states, “We are only equipped to survive, but survival is not enough. We go to malls and stores to buy products from people who don’t even like us…We are buying stuff and we worship ownership. But first we must take ownership of ourselves–when you don’t know yourself, you have no ownership of yourself. If all Black children were made aware of their culture and history beyond the context of slavery, they would rise above the limited frustrations of others and themselves.”

James Mercer Langston Hughes was born February 1, 1902 in Joplin, Missouri. He died May 22, 1967 of cancer. During that 65-year span he created a vast body of work that includes more than 25 books (16 were poetry books), twenty plays, several autobiographical works and radio and television scripts. Some of his most notable works are “The Big Sea,” “I Wonder As I Wander,” “Shakespeare In Harlem” and “The Best of Simple.”

At age 17 he went to Mexico for a year, and despite being with his father found it not to his liking. He also served a hitch in the army and traveled the world, including several trips to Russia and to Africa. The latter influenced his writing, especially in the poem, “The Negro Speaks of Rivers.”

Langston began writing poetry in the eighth grade. Years later and against his father’s wishes, he dropped out of Columbia University. Shortly thereafter his first poem (”The Negro Speaks of Rivers”) was published. Known primarily as a poet, Hughes earned distinction by penning plays, essays and novels as well. He created a series of books on a dim-witted character he called, Jess B. Simple.

But his most well-known work is the poem, “A Dream Deferred”:

What happens to a dream deferred?/
Does it dry up / like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore– / And then run? /
Does it stink like rotten meat? / Or crust and sugar over–
like a syrupy sweet? /
Maybe it just sags / like a heavy load./
Or does it explode?

Hughes asserted, “We younger Negro artists now intend to express our individual dark-skinned selves without fear or shame. If white people are pleased we are glad. If they aren’t, it doesn’t matter. We know we are beautiful. And ugly too… If colored people are pleased we are glad. If they are not, their displeasure doesn’t matter either. We build our temples for tomorrow, as strong as we know how and we stand on the top of the mountain, free within ourselves.”

Hughes heyday was in the 20’s. After a trip to Africa in 1923, he returned and flourished during the Harlem Renaissance. He took a job working under Carter G. Woodson, editor of the Journal of, but returned to Harlem in 1926. He also returned to school (University of Pennsylvania), earning his B.A. degree three years later.

The influence of these four men is alive and well, their works srving as an impetus for today’s new cadre of black poets.

Teen Pregnancy Ruins

Filed under: Uncategorized @ 10:01 pm

One of the biggest problems the teenagers of today face is unplanned pregnancy. The united States has one of the highest pregnancy rates in the world. Close to 1 million teenagers become pregnant each year. Approximately 90% of the pregnancies is unplanned, a number of them which eventually leads to abortion.

Consequences of teenage pregnancy

Unplanned pregnancy poses one of the most devastating problems in life. There is just too much stress to deal with for a teenage mom. The stress that they’re dealing with are time, financial and duties. Imagine the difficulty in juggling the time spent in school, with the baby and earning money just to provide necessities for the baby. Even if a teenage mom decides to forgone of her duties, for example quit school, it does not necessarily makes the situation or the future any better. With insufficient education means that the teenage mom will have to settle for low-paying jobs or worse, being unemployed.

Prevention of teenage pregnancy

I believe one of the most effective prevention measures is by promoting abstinence. Parents should try instilling moral or religious values in their kids. It will prove to be the best prevention, rather than encouraging safe sex with the use of condoms etc.

Proper guidance of teens does not start tomorrow, but today. It’s easy for them to ruin their futures by making a simple mistake and it’s our responsibility as parents, teachers, the society etc to guide them to the right path.

Whenever we are working on our dreams we are going to run into some road blocks or obstacles. The important thing for us to remember is that these are only temporary set backs. We should treat each obstacle as a learning experience and make a mental note not to take that road again. As long as we keep this in mind we won’t give up on our dreams.

While attemting to get a car that I couldn’t afford but was determined to make my dream a reality I ended up having to settle for a car I didn’t want for an entire year. I had to take this road to establish notability with the finance company. This didn’t keep me from dreaming about the car I actually wanted, it was just a step I had to take at the time in order to get where I wanted to be.

Our dreams don’t happen over night. It takes quite a bit of work on our part to make it a reality. Whenever I work on my dream I think about how a baby has to first crawl before they walk and then while they are trying to walk they fall on their butts quite a bit but this doesn’t stop them from keeping on to their goal of walking.

When working on your dream you have to have the mind of a child. You have to believe that dreams do come true. Without this child like quality we are unable to have faith in ourselves. Regardless of what may happen while working on your dream you have to keep on keeping on until you have accomplished that dream.

Home Equity Loans - A Walkthrough Guide of Home Loans

Filed under: Payday Loans @ 7:13 pm

As the interest rate on credit cards and other loans continues to increase, many people have turned to home equity loans as a method of borrowing money at a low interest rate. The equity of your house is the difference between the value of your house at any given time and the amount of money you owe on the total balance. A home equity loan is a great tool for consolidating high interest loans and credit cards.

Another Mortgage - Can You Afford That?

Home equity loans are also known as second mortgages, and can provide you with many benefits that don’t exist with other types of loans. The interest rates can be much lower than credit cards. It isn’t uncommon to see equity loans which have interest rates which are at least 60% lower than credit cards. They are also tax deductible for up to $100,000. This makes them the obvious choice for those who have equity in their homes. Equity loans are flexible, and homeowners can also use a revolving line of credit to borrow money.

Security And Equity Are Required

Unlike many other loans and credit cards, home equity loans are secured. This means that your house is used as collateral. For example, if your house if worth $300,000, and you’ve paid off $50,000, you still owe $250,000. However, if the value of the house has increased from $300,000 to $350,000, you have $100,000 of equity. You can borrow money against this $100,000 by using a home equity loan. At the same time, it is important to remember that if you default on your payments, your home could be taken as collateral to cover the losses of the bank or mortgage company.

Who Will Lend To Me?

Most banks and mortgages companies enjoy providing home equity loans for their customers. A house tends to be the largest investment a person has, and many banks realize that few people will run the risk of losing it by defaulting on their payments. Because of this, home equity loans are considered to be a safe investment. Many people who have homes tend to have a more established credit history than those who do not.

What Can I Use The Home Loan For?

Many people choose to use home equity loans for remodeling their kitchens or bathrooms. Remodeling a part of your house is a great way to increase its value. It is also easy to get approved for loans which you plan on using for remodeling your home. They tend to have very low interest rates, and the amount you choose to borrow should be dictated by how you plan to remodel the home.

Another common use for home equity loans is higher education. As the cost of education continues to rise, it will become harder for many families to send their children to school. Many parents choose to use a home equity loan to invest in the education of their children. Despite this, many federal student loans have low interest rates as well, and parents will want to weigh all their options carefully before making a decision. Home equity loans which are used for education have many tax benefits.

My Mom Used To Say, ‘Prevention Is Better Than Cure’

Because many Americans don’t have health insurance, using equity loans in the event of an illness or injury is a great way to avoid debt. It has become much more difficult for people to file bankruptcy, and because of this it will not be easy to get out of a situation in which you have an unexpected illness. An equity loan could protect you in a situation where you have high medical bills with no health insurance. As the cost of healthcare continues to increase, having a equity loan or line of credit can greatly help you.

Law & Order (Season 2) DVD Review

Filed under: Cinema @ 3:02 pm

Nominated for 52 Emmys since its 1990 premiere, including 11 for Outstanding Drama Series, Law & Order is one of the most popular television shows in modern day history. With an additional 4 Golden Globe nominations for Best TV Series (Drama), Law & Order is more than a TV show, it’s a lucrative franchise for host network NBC, spawning popular spin-offs Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (1999), Law & Order: Criminal Intent (2001), and (the now cancelled) Law & Order: Trial By Jury (2005). Filmed on location in New York City, the show is the brainchild of creator Dick Wolf, a longtime writer for successful TV series such as Hill Street Blues and Miami Vice. With sixteen successful seasons already on the books, and more on the way, Law & Order remains one of the best drama series available on any network…

Law & Order centers around the New York City criminal justice system, where “the people are represented by two separate yet equally important groups - the police who investigate crime, and the district attorneys who prosecute the offenders”. The first half of each one-hour episode is dedicated to the initial revelation of a crime and the police investigation that subsequently takes place. This usually involves interviewing witnesses, following leads, testing evidence, and/or hammering out a confession. Once sufficient evidence has been gathered to charge a suspect, the remainder of the show revolves around the district attorney’s office and their attempts to prosecute the offenders. Oftentimes, the audience will be witness to unexpected plot twists, unorthodox media-driven cases, or last minute, Perry Mason-like confessions or brokered deals. Given its long TV run, the cast of Law & Order has frequently changed over the years - with only a handful of characters experiencing lengthy runs, characters such as Det. Lennie Briscoe (Jerry Orbach), Lt. Anita Van Buren (S. Epatha Merkerson), and EADA John “Jack” McCoy (Sam Waterston)…

The Law & Order (Season 2) DVD features a number of dramatic episodes including the season premiere “Confession” in which Det. Logan goes too far in interrogating the man suspected of Max Greevey’s murder. En route to obtaining a confession, Logan endangers the prosecution’s case… Other notable episodes from Season 2 include “Misconception” in which the mugging of a pregnant woman leads to murder charges when she loses the baby, and “Vengeance” in which the parents of a murder victim attempt to overturn the conviction of her killer so that he can face charges in another state where the death penalty is still enforced…

Air Purifiers: An Investigation of the Types and Their Benefits

Filed under: Better Health @ 2:58 pm

Considering the amount of irritants that are present in the air today, those who suffer from allergies and other breathing disorders are challenged to find effective ways to clean the air that they breathe within their home environment.

Not so many years ago, this simply meant making sure that the house was dusted regularly and that pets were bathed and brushed - outdoors - as often as possible, in order to cut down on the most common allergy inducing factors. Today, there’s far more at stake, when we consider the types of contaminants that are present in our environment as a result of pollution. Bigger challenges, then, require better tools for providing a solution - enter, the air purifier.

The cleaning of the air within your home can be accomplished in a variety of different ways. A simple, straightforward air cleaner is designed to reduce the dust build-up within the home, offering the benefits of cleaner air and less need to perform common household chores, such as dusting. These are electronic in nature and use a basic filtering system that’s designed to draw in, clean and re-circulate the air.

Air purifiers are a bit more complex, in that they are specifically designed to eliminate pollutants such as pollen and other airborne irritants, in addition to the dust that the air cleaner removes from the environment.

These purifiers are available in a number of sizes, including the portable version. In this case, the air is drawn to the bottom of the cleaner and is then pushed upward through an aluminum mesh filter. This is where the pollutants are trapped before the air is moved on to the next phase of the process.

An electronic cleaning cell (two-stage) is the next stop for the airflow, which ionizes dust particles that are invisible to the naked eye and cleans them from the air. From there, the air is diverted to an activated charcoal filter which deodorizes any odors that may remain before the air is re-circulated.

An electronic air purifier should be placed in an area where the highest amount of family traffic takes place, though it can be installed in any room of the home. Complete with a two-speed fan that can typically clean an area of up to 300 cubic feet when on the highest setting, this type of air purifier would be ideal for a room that measured 20′ x 30′.

As economical as it is useful, an electronic air purifier doesn’t require any special wiring, and uses less electricity than that of a 100-watt light bulb.

The electric air cleaner is utilized by placing it in the central duct system, and cleans the air through the process of electrostatic precipitation. Basically, this just means that when the furnace blows smoke and other contaminants into the air, they are forced into a filter, then a charging station that provides charges from tungsten wires.

From there, any remaining particles are forced into a collection area, where they’re trapped and washed away by the cleaning process. Charcoal filters are in position to eliminate any leftover odors from the air, which is then forced out into the home for re-circulation.

Depending upon the design of your home, your economic constraints and the level of allergies that your family members possess, there’s a system that will work for you. Once the air in your home is properly cleaned and purified, you’ll all be breathing much easier.

Vasectomy Reversal After Care

Filed under: University of Gender Studies @ 9:00 pm

Just as with the vasectomy the man will again have after care for the vasectomy reversal. The doctor will be able to give you a list of after care instructions for you to take home following your vasectomy reversal procedure. Actually the best thing to do is ask the doctor to give you the after care instructions and go over them with you a few days before you undergo your vasectomy reversal so that you can go get the items you need and make arrangements fro anything else before you even have your surgery.

The doctor will ask you to stay in your bed or on your favorite recliner for a few days following your vasectomy reversal. You will be instructed to ice down the area for a couple of days to prevent any additional swelling to the scrotum or surrounding areas, Once you are allowed out of your bed you should stay relatively inactive for about a week. Stay away from heavy lifting, running or jumping and pretty much any other high or medium impact activity. The doctor will likely tell you to avoid ejaculation for a few weeks after your vasectomy reversal.

It is likely that you will have at least one follow up visit to make sure that you are healing the right way. The doctor will probably run a number of tests to determine if there is semen in your ejaculate. If the doctor tells you to do something you should do it and understand that it is for your own good.

Lastly, if there is excessive pain, swelling or anything else out of the ordinary as a result of the surgery make sure to let the doctor’s office know about it as it could get worse and cause irreparable damage.

Just as you did with your vasectomy, you will heal from the vasectomy reversal and hopefully go on to prosper and have more children. Though it is not guaranteed, the vasectomy reversal procedure these days has come quite a long way and success rates have definitely gone up. I wish you the best of luck with your vasectomy reversal.
